Socio-Economic Determinants for Biochar Deployment in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania

Biochar may contribute to both agricultural productivity and atmospheric carbon dioxide removal. However, despite the many potential upsides of adding biochar amend carbon-depleted soils in sub-Saharan Africa, deployment is largely lacking. This paper explores socio-economic factors that can explain tendencies avoid action. Based on a survey 172 farming households, key informant interviews, focus group discussions Mbeya Songwe regions Tanzania, which were targeted for aid program 2014, several drivers behind continued use identified this follow-up study. A driver was increased crop yields, perceived be result soils, increasing yields from 1 metric ton per hectare 3 tons hectare. Food security family income cited as main reasons engage production use. Climate change mitigation resilience other motivated adoption. In terms factors, farmers with low education income, majority being males aged 40–60 years, contributed adoption rates study area.
